Ingenious Brewing Co. is located in an industrial area in Humble Texas, roughly 15 to 20 minutes outside of Houston, and recently released their halloween themed monster mash series which includes five beers. all beers were sold as four packs with three of the beers being sold online and in brewery but only two of the beers were sold at the brewery only. The themed beers included a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout, a milk stout, two sours, and one IPA. With this being said let’s take a look at the beers and let you know what we thought about them.
Franken FroYo is a 8.2% abv NE IPA w/ lactose, marshmallow, and strawberries. Pours a light copper pink hued body with a bubbly white head that maintains head retention. Aromas of strawberry chapstick, sweet vanilla, and pink bubblegum. On the plate there is notes of ripe earthy tart strawberry, with a subtle sweetness, and soft marshmallow finish. A medium full body beer with semi fluffy yet sweet fill and earthy strawberry on the finish.
Fruit Brute is a 9% abv Imperial Sour Ale with cherry and marshmallow. Pours ruby red body with a pink head and fruit sediment at the bottom and floating in glass. Aromas of Cherry jam, cherry syrup, liquid cherry candy. Taste profile when drinking this is legit liquid jolly rancher candy with cherry jam and sweet rich marshmallow sweetness. A Full body beer with the right amount of carbonation to cleanse the palate and not make this beer overly sweet.
Boo Berry Fluff is a 6.8% Sour Ale with blueberries and marshmallow. Pours a violet body and pink fizzy head that dissipates fast. Aromas of fresh baked blueberry muffins. Taste profile is the same as the nose a sweet muffin like taste from the marshmallow with tart jammy blueberries and earthy blueberry skin on the finish. A Medium body beer that is to the point of what the beer delivers.
Stout Chocula is a 10% abv Imperial Milk Stout with chocolate and marshmallows. Pours a dark opaque body with a tight khaki head that maintains head retention. Aromas of rich liquid chocolate, ground dark chocolate, coffee roast, and sweetness. Taste profile is the same as the nose with a medium full body. Long lasting complex and a aftertaste of roasted campfire marshmallows.
Yummy Mummy is a 12.5% abv Imperial Stout with oranges, marshmallow, and vanilla beans. What makes this a little special is the fact it is aged in bourbon barrels. This pours dark opaque beer with a khaki head that slowly loses head retention. Aromas of boozy sweet bourbon, soft roast, rich vanilla, and orange citrus that is oily like. Taste is a rich sweet bourbon caramel, rich vanilla, chocolate, and soft coffee with a boozy sweet finish. A full body beer that is super balanced and making you want more.
Our final thoughts on Ingenious Brewing Companies “Monster Mash” beer drop is a solid B grade. This is what we like to see from fall/halloween themed beers. We understand it’s pumpkin season but have fun and show that there is more to pumpkin beers during the fall season. What we wish was different from this drop was the Fraken FroYo it took away from the other beers. After having the others we kind of just forgot about it. Also we wish Stout Chocula was more session able rather than being so high in abv. None the Ingenious did an amazing job.
