What happens when local Rio Grande Valley brewery 5×5 Brewing Co. and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) partner up to brew a blood orange kölsch? You get Los Vaqueros. A beer soon to hit local stores, restaurants, and sold at UTRGV athletic events.

So what exactly is a kölsch?
A kölsch is a style of beer that was first brewed in Germany, and while technically it is an Ale, it also has some brewing traits typical of Lagers. That’s because warm-fermenting ale yeast is used during the brewing of Kolsch, but then it is conditioned at a cold temperature like a lager. With is being said 5×5 brewed this beer with blood oranges that will add some lovely citrus notes making an already refreshing beer more refreshing.

Where to get it before it hits stores?
The University of Texas RGV stated it will be available May 12-14 at UTRGV’s baseball’s final home series against Grand Canyon at UTRGV Baseball Stadium at 6:30pm but fans can expect 5×5 Brewing Co. to host a tailgate party to introduce the new beer at 4pm.

Where to purchase?
Los Vaqueros cans will be sold in most Rio Grande Valley H-E-B, Specs, Total Wine & More, and El Tigre locations. A complete list of restaurants serving Los Vaqueros using a branded tap is still being compiled.
