At some point we all snuck into dads stash of booze and filled it with a bit of water to make sure he didn’t realize even though now at our age we realize when the bartender has watered down our drinks so I’m sure good old pops knew too. But what the hell were we thinking, we didn’t even know what we were drinking, we just knew it was going to make us feel some type of way. Some type of way? The type of way todays breweries are breaking into the spirits world more and more. What the hell are they thinking. While guess what, we think they’re doing what they do best, crafting!
When I got into the craft beer scene around 15 years ago thee only brewery at the time I knew of producing spirits was Rogue Ales and eventually over time I seen Ballast Point, Dogfish Head, and Mikkeller get into the scene. Eventually that trend seemed to fade away even though you could still see their products in stores. Maybe these guys were just ahead of their time or maybe breweries should have been doing it sooner. Now a days more breweries are getting into this scene and recently we’ve seen breweries like Three Floyds, Burning Barrel, and now Stone Brewing Co. getting into the world of spirits.
While what are spirits? They could be those things haunting your house or what cheerleaders have, and they can be that stuff that has a ton of alcohol content that get you feeling real good. But in reality sense spirits are an alcoholic drink produced by the distillation of grains, fruits, vegetables, or sugar that have already gone through alcoholic fermentation. So whether you consume it neat, on the rocks (on ice), or mixed, spirits are starting to be the new it trend over these past years with more and more people learning about it and now more breweries starting to distill it.
So why are more breweries getting into this area of the alcohol world? Could it be they’re trying to bring the term CRAFT back? We can’t truly say but all we can say we are in it and can’t wait to see what happens over the next few years. Will it fade away again or is this something permanent. It’s truly up to us.
