What is Oktoberfest?

Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volkfest (people’s festival), featuring a beer festival and a travelling carnival, and is held annually in Munich, Bavaria, from mid- or late-September to the first Sunday in October. Locally, it is called d’Wiesn, after the colloquial name for the fairgrounds, Theresienwiese. Oktoberfest is an important part of local culture, having been held since the year 1810. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations that are modeled after the original Munich event.

What type of beer is served during Oktoberfest?

Only beer conforming to the Reinheitsgebot and brewed within the city limits of Munich can be served at the Munich Oktoberfest. Beers meeting these criteria are designated Oktoberfest Beer, although the name “Oktoberfest beer” also denotes two distinct beer styles: a traditional Märzen lager and a paler Festbier, that is now more commonly served at Oktoberfest itself. There are 6 official breweries the only serve at this event but we will leave that for an other article in a couple weeks.

So with all this history let’s look at what 5 American breweries and their Oktoberfest themed beers you should check out.

Revolution Brewing – Oktoberfest: A stein full of traditional Märzen offered in anticipation of those days filled with sausage, pretzels, and a table full of friends. Our brewers put all the time and care into this long-lagered beauty using traditional German ingredients and methods. Smooth, toasty flavor and the inviting aromas of hearth-baked bread, finishing with just enough Noble hop character to keep you coming back for another round. One of our most popular food-pairing beers, or worthy of a hearty “prost!” on its own.

Union Craft Brewing – Fest Beer: Fest Beer pours a brilliantly clear honey amber with a tight cap of white foam that sticks tightly to the glass. Classic aromas of the traditional autumnal German-style – toasted bread, bakery-fresh biscuit, and just enough floral and herbaceous hoppiness to keep it crisp. Light undertones of vanilla and almond bring an additional layer of complexity as the beer warms in the glass. A gentle touch of sweetness, moderate body, and medium carbonation round out this deftly balanced lager as a showcase of maltiness and drinkability.

Zilker Brewing Co. – Wunderbier: Light, modern twist on an Oktoberfest classic. Refreshing, dry, toasty, and perfectly bready with a subtle hop bitterness and super clean finish.

Burlington Beer – Good Company: showcases a harmonious balance of malt and hops, giving it a smooth, full-bodied character with a touch of sweetness. The aroma entices with a delicate blend of toasted malt, caramel, and floral hops, evoking memories of festive gatherings and joyful camaraderie. The taste unfolds with an inviting malt backbone, featuring notes of biscuit and honey, while the noble hops lend a subtle bitterness.

Manhattan Project Beer Co. – Oktoberfest: We are fans of Manhattan Project Beer Co. So we know this is going to be a banger. Their beers speak for themselves. Be sure to see this September 21st.
